Ricochet Refresh announcement – please update by September 1

The Tor Project is introducing a breaking change to the Tor protocol, which Ricochet Refresh depends on to provide anonymous messaging. This change will allow users to connect to the Tor network faster, especially those with slower internet connections. However, older Tor clients will no longer be able to connect to the Tor network.

This change will come into effect across the Tor network on September 1, 2026. From that date, only Ricochet Refresh versions newer than 3.0.43 (released June 2, 2026) will continue to function properly.

To determine your client’s version, in Ricochet Refresh click on the “Preferences” button and select the “About” tab. If your reported version is older than 3.0.43, you will need to update your installation to continue using Ricochet Refresh past the September 1 deadline.

To update, go to the Ricochet Refresh website (https:// www.ricochetrefresh.net/), then download and install the latest version. Your existing profile and contacts will be unaffected.

For extra peace of mind, you should back up your profile.

Your profile can be found in the following locations, depending upon your platform:

  • Windows: %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/ricochet-refresh/ricochet.json

  • macOS: ~/Library/Preferences/ricochet-refresh/ricochet.json

  • Linux: ~/.config/ricochet-refresh/ricochet.json
